CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Moments earlier and five-hundred kilometers above, in the spherical room on Prime Ambassador Kumar’s ship, Colonel Miller stood behind Corporal Kara Cooper as she sat at the temporary communication station. They listened to Mac’s situation report come through the radio. Prime Ambassador Kumar stood to the side, listening in.

“Where is the princess?” Colonel Miller asked in an angry tone.

Cooper knew better than to answer Colonel Miller’s rhetorical questions, so she sat silently.

Prime Ambassador Kumar asked, “Are they trying to double cross us, Colonel? These pirates can’t be trusted.”

A few excruciatingly slow minutes passed before they heard from the team on the ground again.

“Command, Black Leader.” Mac’s voice came over the radio.

“Go, Black Leader,” Cooper replied.

“Bone Rattlers say the princess is in a building to the south and not with them. We don’t see her anywhere. Black-2 and Jagoon are checking it out.”

“Black Leader,” Colonel Miller stepped in, “Any idea what they are up to?”

“Colonel, they say they don’t trust us.”

“Yeah, well, we don’t trust them either,” Colonel Miller said.

“Nope. Not one bit. They’re as crooked as a bag full of chubony vipers.”

“Be careful, Major.”

“Stand by, Command.” Mac said.

They listened intently to the background noises and talking among the team on the ground.

“Turn it up, Corporal.”

Cooper turned up the volume. A moment later, the sound of a massive explosion blasted through the speakers, creating screeching feedback. Cooper quickly turned the sound down and looked up at Miller behind her. Her eyes were wide and filled with questions.

“Colonel, something has just happened,” Cooper reported.

Kumar scooted in close, trying to see what was happening.

“What was that?” Miller asked.

“What’s happening, Corporal?” Kumar asked as well.

“I can’t tell. Scanners are picking up what looks from here like an explosion in the vicinity of the team.”

“Are they ok?” Colonel Miller asked frantically.

“Sir, I have no idea.”

“Get them on the radio, right now,” Kumar demanded.

“Black Leader, Command,” Cooper said into the radio with no response. She tried again, “Black Leader, Command. You copy?”

No response.

Cooper tried a third time.
